Research - Poster 1 Analysis

The Messi documentary cover is aimed at football fans, and the target audience would be fans who admire Messi or are interested in his backstory and journey to becoming a great of the game that they love. The main image is a picture of Messi pointing to the sky doing his iconic celebration which represents him thanking his grandmother, which uses iconography as it’s his unique celebration that he popularised and his body language indicates celebration and success. The image being presented from behind implies mystery since you can’t see his face but rather the name and number on the back of his shirt which suggests he is an icon and doesn’t even need to be recognised by his face since his body language displays enough, which is a sign of respect.

The colour scheme is mainly made up of dark blues and blacks, creating a serious and emotional tone. These darker colours connote professionalism, realism and importance, which fits the documentary genre and suggests the film will explore Messi’s journey in depth. The subtle use of warm light around the edges helps to draw the audience’s eye towards the centre of the poster, making Messi the clear focal point and reinforcing his dominance within the frame.
The typography is simple and minimal, with the masthead “Messi” displayed in large bold letters across the middle of the poster. This emphasises star appeal, as Messi’s name alone is enough to attract the target audience without needing additional explanation. The wide spacing of the letters gives the title a premium and cinematic feel, reinforcing the idea that Messi is a legendary figure. The smaller text at the top listing well-known football figures uses intertextuality, appealing to knowledgeable fans and adding credibility to the documentary.
Overall, the poster uses media language and conventions of sports documentaries to present Messi as inspirational, iconic and culturally significant, effectively appealing to dedicated football audiences worldwide.
